Message a WhatsApp Number Without Saving It (or Schedule It)
Message a WhatsApp number without saving it: open a wa.me link to chat now, or schedule it in Chatmaid's Unsaved tab. With number formats and error fixes.

You don't have to save a number to message it on WhatsApp. To send right now, open a click-to-chat link: https://wa.me/ followed by the full number in international format, digits only, with no plus sign, spaces or dashes. WhatsApp then opens a chat with that number. To send later, add the number in the Unsaved tab of Chatmaid Schedule, write your message and pick a time. It goes out from your own WhatsApp number at that time, even if your phone is off. Either way, the number stays out of your address book.
One rule applies to every method below: only message people who expect to hear from you. The section on ban risk explains why.
How do you message an unsaved number on WhatsApp right now?
Use a click-to-chat (wa.me) link
WhatsApp's help center article on click to chat describes the format. The link is https://wa.me/<number>, where the number is the full phone number in international format. WhatsApp says to omit any zeros, brackets or dashes. Its own example of the right and wrong way:
- Use:
https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX - Don't use:
https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX
Steps:
- Write the number in international format: country code first, then the rest of the number (see the formatting section below).
- Remove the plus sign, spaces, brackets, dashes and any leading zero of the local number.
- Put it after
https://wa.me/, for examplehttps://wa.me/447XXXXXXXXXfor a UK mobile. - Open the link. On a phone, paste it into your browser's address bar. On a computer, open it in the browser where you use WhatsApp Web.
- If a WhatsApp page opens first, showing "Chat on WhatsApp with" and the number, continue to the chat. On a phone, tap Open app. On a computer, click Continue to WhatsApp Web, or Open app if you use the desktop app. Then type your message and send it.
According to the same help article, click to chat works on your phone and on WhatsApp Web, and the person needs an active WhatsApp account.
Add a pre-filled message
You can put the text in the link so it appears in the message box when the chat opens. The format is https://wa.me/<number>?text=<message>, with the message URL-encoded. In URL encoding, a space becomes %20, a comma %2C, a question mark %3F, an ampersand %26, a hash %23, a plus sign %2B and a line break %0A.
https://wa.me/447XXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%2C%20this%20is%20Dana%20from%20the%20open%20house%20on%20SaturdayThe message is only filled in. Nothing is sent until you tap send. That makes pre-filled links handy when you have the same opening line for several people, such as a short template you reuse after events.
How do you schedule a WhatsApp message to an unsaved number?
A wa.me link sends the message right away, while you are there to tap send. When you want the message to go out later, for example a follow-up on Monday morning to a lead you met on Saturday, use a scheduler that accepts typed-in numbers. In Chatmaid Schedule that is the Unsaved tab.
Chatmaid links to your WhatsApp the way WhatsApp Web does, as a linked device. Messages are sent from your own number. It is not the WhatsApp Business API, and nothing is spoofed.
Steps in the Chatmaid Schedule app (iPhone or Android):
- Open the Schedule tab. The first step is Select Contacts.
- Next to Contacts and Groups, tap Unsaved. The Add Phone Number window opens.
- In Phone Number, type or paste the number with its country code, for example
+44 7XXX XXXXXX. Spaces, dashes and brackets are fine here, and so is the plus sign. - Check the line under the field. When the number is valid, the field turns green and the line shows the number back in international format. Make sure the country code in that line is the right one: a short local number typed without a country code can pass the check under the wrong country. If the field turns red with "Please enter a valid phone number," fix the number before you continue.
- Optionally fill in Contact Name. It only labels the recipient inside Chatmaid. Leave it empty and the number is used as the name.
- Tap Add to Message. Repeat for other unsaved numbers, or add saved contacts and groups to the same message.
- Tap Next and write your message. Attachments, voice notes and text formatting work the same as for any contact.
- Tap Next, choose One-time or Recurring (daily, weekly or monthly), and pick the date and time.
- Review the summary on Confirm Schedule and confirm.
What happens next:
- The number is not added to your phone's contacts. The Add Phone Number window has a separate Save to Phone Contacts button for when you do want to keep it.
- At the scheduled time, Chatmaid's cloud sends the message from your WhatsApp number. Your phone can be off, out of battery or offline. See how sending works when your phone is off.
- The recipient gets a normal WhatsApp message from your number.
- The message appears in History with your scheduled, completed and failed messages. Until it is sent, you can open it and edit it.
Recurring sends work the same way for unsaved numbers as for saved ones, which helps with things like a monthly payment reminder to a tenant whose number you never saved. The guide to recurring WhatsApp messages covers the daily, weekly and monthly options in detail.
As of October 2026, WhatsApp's own scheduled messages are only in beta: some Android beta testers have had them since 12 October and, since 22 October, some iPhone testers on TestFlight (per WABetaInfo). They are not in the regular app yet. Our complete guide to scheduling WhatsApp messages covers what that beta can do and where it stops.
How should you format the number with a country code?
Most problems with unsaved numbers come down to formatting. The core rules apply in every country, with a few local exceptions such as Argentina below; only the punctuation differs between a wa.me link and an app field.
- Start with the country code. 1 for the US and Canada, 44 for the UK, 91 for India, 34 for Spain, 55 for Brazil, 54 for Argentina.
- Drop the leading zero (or trunk prefix) of the local number. A UK mobile written locally as 07XXX XXXXXX becomes 44 7XXX XXXXXX.
- Drop international dialing codes. Don't start with 00 or 011. The country code replaces them.
- For wa.me links, use digits only. No plus, spaces, brackets or dashes.
- In Chatmaid, a plus and spaces are fine. What matters is that the country code is there. The field's placeholder says so: "Enter phone number with country code."
WhatsApp's help center has a page on adding international numbers that says to start with a plus sign and the country code, and to remove any leading zeros or special calling codes. It also lists a rule that often trips people up: WhatsApp says all Argentine numbers need a 9 between the country code and the area code, and the local prefix 15 must be removed, so the final number has 13 digits: +54 9 XXX XXX XXXX.
Examples, with X standing in for the rest of the number:
| Country | Written locally | International (Chatmaid field) | wa.me link |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | (XXX) XXX-XXXX | +1 XXX XXX XXXX | wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX |
| United Kingdom | 07XXX XXXXXX | +44 7XXX XXXXXX | wa.me/447XXXXXXXXX |
| India | 098XXX XXXXX | +91 98XXX XXXXX | wa.me/9198XXXXXXXX |
| Spain | 6XX XXX XXX | +34 6XX XXX XXX | wa.me/346XXXXXXXX |
| Brazil (São Paulo mobile) | (11) 9XXXX-XXXX | +55 11 9XXXX XXXX | wa.me/55119XXXXXXXX |
| Argentina (Buenos Aires mobile) | 011 15 XXXX-XXXX | +54 9 11 XXXX XXXX | wa.me/54911XXXXXXXX |
If someone gives you a number without a country code, ask which country it is from rather than guessing. A number that looks valid in one country can belong to a different person in another.
What are the common errors, and how do you fix them?
WhatsApp says "The phone number shared via URL is invalid"
This means WhatsApp couldn't match the link to an account: either the number is formatted wrong or it isn't on WhatsApp. Check, in this order: the country code is there, the plus sign and any 00 are gone, the leading zero of the local number is gone, and there are no spaces or dashes left. If it still fails, the number may not be on WhatsApp. People often use WhatsApp on a different number from the one they hand out, such as a personal mobile instead of the office line on a business card. Ask the person which number they use for WhatsApp.
Chatmaid says "Please enter a valid phone number"
The Add to Message button stays disabled until the number is valid. The usual cause is a missing country code. Without one, Chatmaid can't know which country the number is from, so most local numbers are rejected, and a short one may be accepted with the wrong country code. Type the number again starting with + and the country code, and check that the number shown under the field starts with the right code. Also check for a missing or extra digit.
The pre-filled text is cut off or garbled
Characters such as &, # and + have special meanings in a URL. If they are not encoded, the text stops early (& and #) or a + turns into a space. Encode the whole message (most programming languages and many free online tools have a "URL encode" function), or keep pre-filled messages short and plain.
The scheduled message shows as failed in History
Open the message in History. Two causes are common. Either the number is not on WhatsApp, or it was typed incorrectly, so check it against the formatting rules above. Or your WhatsApp was disconnected from Chatmaid at send time. Open the Home tab, reconnect if it says you're not connected, then schedule the message again.
The message reached the wrong person
This almost always means the country code was missing or wrong, and the digits matched someone else's number in another country. If you can, delete it for everyone in WhatsApp, then send it again with the full international number.
Can messaging unsaved numbers get your WhatsApp banned?
With normal use, a ban is very unlikely. WhatsApp restricts accounts that behave like spam: unsolicited bulk messages to people who do not have you saved. A message to an unsaved number that someone gave you is normal use. Messaging many strangers who never asked to hear from you is not.
Practical rules:
- Only message people who expect you. They gave you their number, filled in your form, booked with you, or asked you to follow up.
- Don't message numbers from bought or scraped lists. Those people don't expect to hear from you, which is exactly the pattern that looks like spam.
- Say who you are in the first line. "Hi, it's Dana from the open house on Saturday" gives the person context before they decide whether to reply.
- Keep it relevant. One clear follow-up beats a series of nudges.
- Ask them to save your number, or to message you first. A quick reply from them, or your number saved on their side, makes your follow-ups part of a normal conversation instead of messages from a stranger.
If you run a business and need to message a list of customers who opted in, Chatmaid Web has contact lists and campaigns that space the sends out. The same rule still applies: only people who expect to hear from you. For wording that sounds like a person, not a broadcast, the 50 WhatsApp reminder templates are a good starting point.
Which method should you use?
| Need | wa.me link | Chatmaid Unsaved tab |
|---|---|---|
| Send right now | Yes | No, it schedules ahead |
| Send at a later date and time | No, the link only opens the chat | Yes |
| Repeat daily, weekly or monthly | No | Yes |
| Several unsaved numbers in one scheduled send | No, one chat per link | Yes |
| You must be there to tap send | Yes | No, it sends from the cloud even if your phone is off |
| Adds the number to your contacts | No | Only if you tap Save to Phone Contacts |
| Cost | Free | 7-day free trial, then $2.79 a month |
For a one-off reply to a delivery driver or a number on a flyer, a wa.me link is enough. For follow-ups you want to send at a set time, or reminders that repeat, schedule them. Real estate agents are a good example: the real estate playbook shows how to time follow-ups to the people you met at a showing. Plans and prices are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Will the number be saved to my contacts?
No. A wa.me link opens a chat without touching your address book, and Chatmaid's Unsaved tab adds the number only to that message. In Chatmaid, the number is saved to your phone only if you tap Save to Phone Contacts.
Can I schedule a message to an unsaved number on iPhone?
Yes. Chatmaid Schedule is available on iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play), and the Unsaved tab works the same on both.
Can I message an unsaved number from WhatsApp Web?
Yes. WhatsApp's help center says click-to-chat links work on WhatsApp Web as well as on your phone. Open the wa.me link in the browser where you use WhatsApp Web, then click Continue to WhatsApp Web.
Will they see my profile photo if I haven't saved their number?
That depends on your privacy settings. Under WhatsApp's default settings, anyone can see your profile photo, but only your contacts can see your About, according to WhatsApp's help page on privacy settings. If you've limited your profile photo to My contacts, a person whose number you haven't saved won't see it. Either way, say who you are in the first line.
How can I check whether a number is on WhatsApp without saving it?
Open https://wa.me/ followed by the number in international format and continue to the chat. If a chat opens, the number is on WhatsApp. If WhatsApp says the number is invalid, check the formatting first, then ask the person which number they use for WhatsApp.
How much does it cost?
wa.me links are free. Chatmaid Schedule has a 7-day free trial with every feature and no credit card, then costs $2.79 a month.
